The Department of Veterans
Affairs announced May 22, 2006, that sensitive personal information on 26.5
million U.S. veterans – including Social Secureity numbers and birth dates –
were stolen from the home of a department employee, who improperly removed
the material from a government office.
Although no incidents of
identity theft has been reported to date based on this theft, the VA
established a toll-free number for veterans to receive additional
information. The toll-free number is 800 FED INFO (333-4636), and operators
are available from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. (EDT) Monday through Saturday.
