Blended star Kevin Nealon

Kevin Nealon may be keeping audiences in stitches in the new hit comedy Blended, which hit theatres last weekend; but for a split-second he gave serious thought to a seemingly outlandish question.

Could he make a positive impact on an NFL team today?

Confused as to why the Blended star was even posed with the question; especially since he didn't even suit up on the gridiron at St. Joseph High (Trumbull, Conn.) back in his heyday.

"I took a night course at Fairfield so I would qualify to play football," Nealon said. "Compared to the rest of the players I was pretty good. The NFL, umm, probably not now."

I caught up with Nealon to chop-it-up about everything from what fans can expect from Blended to why he thinks this year's NBA championship trophy will ultimately end up back in Miami.

Jason Jordan: Did you play sports coming up in high school?

Kevin Nealon: I didn't in high school, but I played sandlot football and intramural basketball and things like that. I did play football, soccer and rugby in college though. I graduated from Sacred Heart and took a night course at Fairfield so I would qualify to play football.

JJ: What position?

KN: Quarterback, kicker and punter.

JJ: Were you good or nah?

KN: Well, it was a club football league so compared to the rest of the players I was pretty good. I was nominated MVP. I did pretty well because I played a lot growing up. We used to play against kids from across town with no refs and it was just a free-for-all. It was pretty serious. I got tough that way.

JJ: What was your shining moment?

KN: We played Saint Francis University and it was their homecoming and they were the No. 1 team and we hadn't won a game in years. They were expected to crush us but we beat them. I remember relishing that moment; just sitting there on the field for quite a while after it was over.

JJ: Let's say an NFL team gave you a shot today; would you have a positive impact?

KN: The NFL, umm, probably not now, but when I got into standup comedy I was going to also tryout for the USFL L.A. Express team. I bought footballs and was practicing and everything, but, thankfully, my comedy career took off so I didn't need that hook.

JJ: Time to take it random; what's your biggest pet peeve?

KN: When people are at a stoplight texting in their car and the light turns green. That's pretty annoying.

JJ: What competition based reality show would you absolutely win?

KN: The Biggest Loser.

JJ: What random game are you king of?

KN: Chutes and Ladders. I play with my 7 year old.

JJ: Unfortunately you've found yourself in the Witness Protection Program, what's your cover name going to be?

KN: Dirk Storm.

JJ: Who wins a UFC tournament with all comedians/actors?

KN: Joe Rogan.

JJ: What fast food restaurant has the best burgers?

KN: Johnny Rockets.

JJ: If you could go back and be a fly on the wall during any event in history which would you pick?

KN: Ooh I'd probably pick the Bill and Hillary (Clinton) debacle.

JJ: What's the most overused slang phrase or word?

KN: When people say "Really?"

JJ: What's the most random fact that you know?

KN: It's safer to fly in a plane than it is to drive.

JJ: Who would you not want to meet in a dark alley?

KN: I'm not really afraid of anybody... Maybe Joe Rogan.

JJ: What song makes you dance?

KN: Happy!

JJ: Let's hop in the DeLorean time machine (Back to the Future) what time period would you love to drop in on?

KN: I'd say the old west. I'd like to be a gunslinger.

JJ: Would you rather have the power to be invisible or the power the read minds?

KN: I'd go with invisible; then you could basically read minds because you could be around people when they're by themselves to know what they're talking about.

JJ: If you would absolutely get away with it what crime would you commit?

KN: Ooh, I'd probably rob a bank.

JJ: What's your secret talent?

KN: I actually play the five string banjo.

JJ: What's on your perfect pizza?

KN: Cheese and black olives.

JJ: Twitter or Instagram?

KN: Twitter.

JJ: What's your favorite gadget?

KN: Gotta go with my cell phone.

JJ: Who wins the NBA title?

KN: Gotta say the Heat.

JJ: Talk about what we can expect from your character in Blended.

KN: Well, my character is an interesting fella; he's married to a much, much younger woman who's about 23 and I have a 16-year-old son. I'm all over my wife in the movie; just lots of PDA and I'm always giving advice to Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore trying to get them to relax and enjoy what's going on. The movie is really fun. It's got a lot of different things going on; you'll laugh, you'll cry and it takes place in South Africa so you get a little glimpse of what that's like too. Definitely a great movie.
