‘7plus First’ strategy on overseas programming in 2025

"The content coming to us from this year's LA screenings is the best I've seen for many years," says Seven's Angus Ross.

Seven is adopting a ‘7plus First’ approach for its overseas programming in 2025.

While Mr Bates v the Post Office was a rare linear and BVOD hit for Seven this year, it’s been a long time since Seven has matched the success of The Good Doctor.

That’s largely due to streaming giants owning the premium drama space but also other factors at play.

Seven Group Managing Director, Television, Angus Ross, said, “We’re going to take things to the next level with our exclusives, introducing a ‘7plus First’ approach to all of our new overseas programming. It’s our intention to drop one new premium series every single month. Now, the reason I’m particularly excited about this approach for 25 is that after a pandemic, writers strike, actors strike, and anything else you can think of, the content coming to us from this year’s LA screenings is the best I’ve seen for many years.

“First up the show all of Hollywood is talking about Suits: LA, spinning off from one of the most streamed shows in the world, Suits.

“You’re not going to see this one on Prime. You won’t see it on Apple, and you sure won’t see it on Netflix. You will see it on 7plus first.”

Suits: LA premieres February 23 on NBC and Seven will reveal an Australian date in coming weeks.

“And the show I’m getting some Desperate Housewives vibes about. You might think being part of a gardening club would be quite mundane, but Grosse Point Garden Society from NBC delivers a world packed with suspense, secrecy and suburban melodrama. Plant yourself in front of any screen for this mystery.”

Also coming is Doc starring Molly Parker (Accused, Lost in Space, House of Cards) as a brilliant doctor who suffers a brain injury which erases the last eight years of her life. The 10 part series is based on an Italian medical drama..

Chief Content Officer Brook Hall told TV Tonight,Doc, which is from Sony, kind of gives us that Good Doctor feel. It’s not the same obviously some medical drama, but again, something just a bit of a different. As when House burst onto the scene, and then The Good Doctor, we think this is a next avenue into that.”

Seven also has US comedy St Denis Medical, UK mystery series Ludwig, US come drama The Hunting Party and NBC documentary series The Americasco-produced by BBC Natural History Unit with Universal Television.

“We’re also going to the National History space with The Americas. NBC are launching that at the start of the year, Tom Hanks narrates it, as a really high end blue-chip series.

“It’s 10 episodes going down the continent of the Americas, North and South America.”

  1. If more Australian content is coming from 7 than hopefully this works out. Otherwise it is a question if how many major timeslots are filled up by these international shows going forward.

    1. Comcast has their own battles keeping the US business afloat. I think the barrier to entry in Australia is just too high now. With Max launching next year the SVOD market will be saturated and some will have to merge or die. 7 should have partnered with NBC years ago to launch Peacock or similar service to Australia, but that ship has sailed.

One thing 7 doesnt do well is consistency. Someone’s already mentioned 9-1-1. This is a hit show and 7 stuff the Australian audience around with it. I fear Suits:LA may suffer a similar fate. They’ll say ‘7plus first’ but hogtie the show to some old linear standards instead of rolling it out in line with NBC. All that does is make people search for alternative ways to view it, and they’ll always find it.

  2. St Denis medical has been on air for over a month in the US. If they continue to make us wait to see shows Americans audiences are getting way earlier, they will struggle with their plans. There’s no reason all of those shows can’t drop day and date here same time as US
