Echoes from the Beacon: History of Eagle Harbor Lighthouse
Take a glimpse into the past at one of the Keweenaw Peninsula’s most iconic lighthouses
EAGLE HARBOR, Mich. (WLUC) - Tucked away in the remote reaches of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula lies a treasure trove of history with stories waiting to be told. Some of the most captivating tales come from the farthest corners of the map.
Founded in 1844 during the height of the Copper Boom, Eagle Harbor is a small town steeped in history. Among its most iconic landmarks is the Eagle Harbor Lighthouse, established in 1877. This towering beacon has not only guided ships but also housed generations of keepers.
In the first installment of “Echoes from the Beacon”, Keweenaw County Historical Society Vice-President Karen Hintz, Trustee Tom Burns, and Lighthouse Curator Susan Regan share the fascinating history of the lighthouse, discussing its origens, the many keepers who maintained it, and the evolution of its lenses and lighting system.
