The Nissan DeltaWing team had one goal for its car entering its North American debut at Petit Le Mans--finish the race. No one could have expected what was in store for the car as the team rolled it to the grid on Saturday morning.
In just its second race (it failed to finish the race at Le Mans in the spring), the revolutionary race car hung with the leaders throughout the 1,000-mile race at Road Atlanta. It qualified 10th out of 42 cars. It then began the race at the back of the field as an unclassified car not running for points.
Drivers Gunnar Jeannette and Lucas Ordoez made it an historic day for the car, piloting the DeltaWing all the way through the field to a fifth-place finish.
In this video, watch the car handle in traffic and hear what designer Ben Bowlby and the two drivers had to say about a big weekend for the team.
"Tonight is just an incredible milestone for the DeltaWing team," Bowlby said. "The car ran flawlessly."
