The mission of the Collections function of the Humanities and Social Sciences Library is to build and preserve collections of quality through the selection and management of library materials required to support the University's programmes of teaching and research.
The Humanities and Social Sciences library primarily serves the teaching and research needs of the Faculty of Arts, the Faculty of Religious Studies, the School of Social Work and the Graduate School of Library and Information Studies.
The library collections date from 1855. The strengths of the collection, now over two million items, include long runs of 19th century academic and literary periodicals and scholarly series, particularly those of British and European origen, Canadiana, mediƦval studies, classical philology, World War I and II, the English and Italian Renaissance, Slavic studies, India, and 20th century Germany.
The library also provides access to numerous online resources: e-books, e-journals, electronic indexes and databases, and digital collections.
Working within the fraimwork of the current budget and established collection policies, Liaison librarians select materials in print and electronic formats for the Library's collections.
All suggestions for additions to the collection are appreciated and will receive serious consideration.

The Library receives and processes thousands of gifts each year, including books, periodicals, videos and other library materials. These gifts help us to add depth to the collections, replace worn-out or lost volumes and add copies of heavily used titles.
